Kanuni Sultan Suleyman had reigned for forty-six years (1520-1566) and this was the most successful period of the Ottoman Empire. Seydi Ali Reis was born in Sinop at the beginning of the 16th century. He moved to Galata after the conquest of Istanbul. He had a sailor family and like his grandfather he worked at the dockyards. (Mirat ul Memalik, 212) His duty was also the same: to bring the fleet from Basra to Egypt.
"... With God's help we sank and utterly destroyed one of the enemy's galleons. Never before within the annals of history has such a battle been fought, and words fail me to describe it." (Mirat ul Memalik, 214) The battle continued till sunset and at last the Admiral of the enemy fleet was frightened and returned. "With the help of Allah, and under the lucky star of Padishah, the enemies of Islam had been defeated." (Mirat ul Memalik, 214)
