The Federal Republic of Germany is made up of 16 states known as "Lander." They are Baden Wettemberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schlewwig-Holsten, Thuringia, Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg. Each of which has a constitution that must be consistent with the republican, democratic and social principles embodied in the German Constitution.After the Napoleonic wars, the Austro-Prussian War, and both World Wars, Germany, was divided and the largest state, which is Prussia dissolved. Most of the states were established after 1945 and they kept their ethnic traditions and characteristics and some of the old boundaries. Federal Republic of Germany consisted of eleven states until it was reunited in 1990. These eleven states were developed in the western zones and had democratic constitutions between 1946-1957. The Soviet zone became the German Democratic Republic, which formed five states. These were later replaced by a centralized administration. The north consists of dry, sandy lowlands with many lakes as well as heaths and moors. There's fertile land across the Central Upland Ranger. The lowlands include the Lower Rhenish Bight, the Westphalian Bight, and the Saxon Thuringian Bight. The marshes along the North Sea coast extend as far as the geest. The climate has a moderate cool west wind zone between the Atlantic Ocean and the continental climate in the east. There are rarely any sharp changes in temperature. The country has precipitation all year round. The winter has an average temperature of 1.5°C in the lowlands and -6°C in the mountains. The warmest month of the year is July and temperature range is 18°C in low regions and 20°C in the secluded valleys of the south. The upper Rhine Trough has extremely mild climate. Upper Bavaria has a warm Alpine wind form the south. The Harz Mountains, a climate zone of its own with cold winds, cool summers, and heavy snow in the winter.
