Rembrandt

During the 17th century many famous European artists came about. And among these artists is one of the most famous of all, Rembrandt van Rijn. Rembrandt possessed a profound understanding of human nature that was matched by a brilliant technique; Not only in painting but in drawing and etching as well. Rembrandts works made an enormous impact on his contemporaries and it influenced the style in which many artists later to come used. Rembrandts brilliant work isn't the only thing of interest.

Rembrandt was born in Leiden on July 15, 1606. Leiden is a city in the Netherlands in a province south of Holland. Rembrandt is the son of a miller. Despite the fact Rembrandts family came from rather modest means, Rembrandts family made sure that he received a good education. Rembrandt began his studies at a Latin school in Leiden where he studied mathematics, Greek, classical literature, geography, and history. From here Rembrandt enrolled at the University of Leiden at the age of 14. Rembrandt grew rather bored with the program at the University and he soon left to study art-first with a local master Jacob van Swanenburch, a history painter who spent time in Italy. With Swanenburch Rembrandt studied the Italian masters of the Renaissance

Despite all these problems Rembrandts work by no way was affected. If anything his artistry increased. During this time Rembrandt painted the Jewish Bride (1632), The Syndics of the Clothe Guild (1661), Bathsheba (1654), Jacob Blessing the Sons of Joseph (1656), and a self-portrait (1658).

To begin Rembrandts beloved Hendrickje died. Then in 1668, a year before Rembrandts death himself, his beloved son Titus died of the plague. One can only wonder how this great artist made it through his final months. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn died on October 4, 1669, eleven months after his sons death. Rembrandt was buried on October 8th in Westerkerk.

Rembrandt despite his success as an artist, teacher, and art dealer his penchant for ostentatious living forced him to declare bankruptcy in 1656. Rembrandts collection of art and antiquities was taken before an auction and sold to pay off his depts. Rembrandts collection included ancient sculptures, Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings, Far Eastern art, contemporary Dutch works, weapons, and armor. Also Rembrandts house was sold in the auction forcing Rembrandt, Titus, Hendrickje, and Cornelia to move to a more modest location on the Rozengracht.

In 1629 Rembrandt began the first of his numerous self-portraits. The paintings he completed in his studio showed a more mature use of chiaroscuro technique then his former master Lastman. Also in his studio Rembrandt worked alongside Jan Lievens, a man who was also a former student of Lastman. Rembrandt and Lievens often worked on identical themes. In 1929 when Rembrandt produced paintings focusing on the apostle Paul (Peter and Paul in Conversation), Jan Lievens painted the same apostle. A year after this Rembrandts father died. Then in 1631 Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam. Rembrandts reputation in Amsterdam and else where grew when he painted The Anatomy lesson o
