The poem "Journey of the Magi" may seem to be just the story of some Magi and their men's wild experiences in the desert. However, the details in the poem prove otherwise. In all truth, the poem describes how the world is full of sin but changing upon the coming of a birth.
The Magi begin there journey in a distant place. The journey begins not in the summer but in "The very dead of winter" (5). The world is cold, not only because of the winter but because of the sin the world. The cold inflicts its toll on the Magi and their men. The cold as if it were Satan himself trying to keep the Magi and their men away from Bethlehem. They think of warmer and more fun times with their liquor and women.
