John's career began got started in February of 1971 when John went to Chicago to audition for the Second City. At the age 22 years old was the youngest ever to get the job. As a cast member he played many different characters ranging from the mayor of Chicago to Hamlet, to singer, Joe Cocker. Johns Impression of Joe had a voice perfect for the imitation, his body movements were erratic and quick and as he sang he poured beer down his shirt and laid down and spit it up in the air. To say the least, John nailed that one gained him a lot of attention in the fall of his first year and it alone was paving the road for things to come. The spring of 1972 marked 14 months with Second City, it was time to move onto other things. Moving on for John was going to work on the Lemming's show. This led John to several other movie roles over the next two years. The list of movies included; Going South, Old Boyfriends and 1941. In 1979 John left Saturday night live to start work on a film with his longtime best friend Dan Aykroyd. The movie would be about a pair of brothers who try to get their blues band back together. The two developed the characters on SNL, during a sketch with Paul Schaeffer.

Two days later a memorial service took place in front of 1,000 of John's family members and friends. Who sat puzzled looking and wondering why Aykroyd was standing at the front with a tape player. He held the microphone to the speaker, and pressed play. It was the song "2000- pound bee" at first everyone sat stunned and speechless, but then began to laugh.

While filming the movie the two spent one afternoon talking and listening to music as good friends do, and the subject of their deaths came up. The song "2000-pound bee'' came on and Dan said to John " You got to promise me something; if I die before you have to play this song at my funeral...because it's.....Wouldn't it be great to lay this noisy, heavy tape on a church full of people!" John replied by saying "sure, and you do the same for me"

The funeral took place on March 9 in Abel's Hill Cemetery on Martha's Vineyard, and was led buy Dan Aykroyd on his motorcycle, while James Taylor played "That Lonesome Road".
