Following and Breaking the Third Command There are many different ways people follow and break the third command. The Third commandment states that “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God”. However, by gossiping and claiming Christianity but not following the Word of God, then a person is using His name in vain. However, if one follows the gospel they are not taking the Lords name in vain, rather, they are glorifying Him. Hypocrisy is something that many Christians are guilty of, therefore they are also guilty of breaking the third command. In the Bible it states “I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do I consort with hypocrites” Ps. 26:4. Therefore, if one is a hypocrite and claims to be a Christian when, in fact, they are not following Christ, then Christ will not consort with them. If a person claims to be a Christian, yet does not constantly act Christ-like they are being a hypocrite, which is not accepted by Jesus.
