The Effects of Social Backgrounds on Society
The Affects of Social Backgrounds on SocietyThe heroic epic has been a favorite plot for writers since Babylonian times. The stories all consist of similar aspects. There is a hero who is the main character and the protagonist in the story. The plot focuses on the hero and his/her struggle to overcome a greater force which most likely will be a form of government, a government official or divine entities. The hero will either overcome his opponents or die due to a tragic flaw that he/she possesses. In the end, there is a moral to the story which is intended to educate the reader or audience. Frankenstein, 1984 and Hamlet all share these similarities but are also independently distinctive. Epics are very common because people enjoy reading about men and women who are human, but seem to possess a nature which propels them against greater odds for better or for worse. In 1984 and Hamlet, we are presented with two main characters who are being oppressed by their own governments. Whereas in Frankenstein, Victor feels that he has been oppressed by God and in order to overcome God, he needs to accomplish the miracle which sets him apart from god, the creation of life from death and in doing so creates a creature that take
The audience learns much from these stories but is unclear whether the protagonists actually bring about some change in their environments. In Frankenstein, Victor tells Walton about his horrifying ordeal so that he might learn not to be so ambitious to test the limits, but Walton still bothers to ask Victor how it was that he reanimated a dead corpse. It appears that Victor has only managed to bring grief into the world and to the ones he loves. In 1984, Winston doesn't even come close to making a difference. He disillusions himself by thinking that he can overcome an entire government and in the process he takes the woman that he cared the most for with him. He is completely broken down and is a shell of a man before he is finally killed. In that society, there isn't any chance to influence another person to change because there is an enormous amount of fear which holds you back from thinking different than the system. In effect, there is no way to win, if you play by their rules, you lose and if you don't, you lose. Hamlet is the only character which actually brings about some change. He first convinces his mother of her wrongdoings and later by disposing of Claudius, he rids Denmark of its wickedness and brings about good fortune to his people. He is able to bring about more change because in order for him to change the system, all he had to do was to get rid of the king. s the form of God and punishes Victor for his insolence. Although God and government are not identical, they both are similar in the respect that they both possess absolute power. In Hamlet, Hamlet is distraught by the wickedness of his uncle and his monarchy. In 1984, Winston knows that the Oce
