Banquo, in this novel, is the character that represents virtue and honor. He plays one of the generals in the kings army and the comrade of Macbeth. He is soon faced with a decision. He has to decide whether he should trust his suspicions and accuse Macbeth of killing Duncan or stay silent and let these murders continue. There are many possibilities of what could happen both ways. In the novel he had to consider these to make his choice.
This novel takes place in the time period when Scotland was at war with other divisions within its country. Macbeth, with the battles he led and had come out victorious proved to be a great leader for Scotland. Banquo was afraid of the fate of Scotland so that was a possibility he had to consider before turning Macbeth in. Scotland could be turned over to another group or country without the leadership of Macbeth. Banquo didn't just fear for his son, but for himself as well. Even if he did accuse Macbeth of this crime he didn't have enough evidence to support it. If he accused him of this felony and was proven wrong he could lose respect and be seen as a traitor just trying to over throw Macbeth for his own self prophet. His postition could be endangered and he could even lose it completely. Macbeth would have total control over the punishment of Banquo which he realizes could be death. Macbeth expressed his fear of Banquo, "To be thus is nothing; but to be safely thus; our fears in Banquo stick deep; and his royalty of nature Reigns that which would be fear'd:' tis much he dares, and to that dauntless temper of his mind,...". Banquo realizes that Macbeths ambition is strong and that he wants no obstacles to stand in his way; such an obstacle would be him. The main reason why Banquo has remained silent about the situation is that he is in hope that the prophecies will be fulfilled for him as they were for Macbeth.
