A detailed Summary of Fredrick Douglass

Fredrick Douglass was born in February of 1818. H was born into slavery and throughout his life experienced many situations, which helped sculpt and develop him as a person. He remained determined with high spirits in order to reach his goal of being educated. Once he had gained his freedom he dedicated himself to traveling and speaking to people, which later earned him the honor of being one of the greatest African American speakers of all time.

Slaves were thought of as nothing more than a piece of meat used to make the white man prosper. The slaves were given limited clothing and food not suitable to provide any descent life style. The clothing was limited and was not enough to keep them warm through the winter. They would receive a monthly allowance of food which consists of eight pounds of pork and one bushel of corn meal. The amount of work they did, did not determine how much food or extra attention they received. Because of the dramatic amount of slaves over populating the number of masters, the slaves were treated in such a way that it was clear to them that they were not equal. In reading the novel, I became more aware of the harsh environment that actually took place during that time. Slavery was a very important step for America to over come. I believe that everything happens for a reason. With the end of slavery many rights and movement came about opening up many new doors for the new world. The book shows us that we are all created equal.

Douglass was deprived of many set values, which usually are present during childhood. He was busy being moved around from plantation to plantation with nothing steady in his life at all. The only religion that would have been introduced to him was probably that of his masters. He questioned the intentions of their God. He asked himself why God would let people treat him the way they did. Therefore, Douglass rejected learning religion that way and was curious to discover it on his own. He was educating himself and at the same time he was exploring. Nobody forced any religion on him. As he became more educated he began to develop his own views. His view towards Christmas was very negative because of the way it was used and displayed to him being a slave. Religion was something Douglass educated himself on.

Due to the unlimited amount of power given to many master, they developed a sense of superiority. With the ability to treat people like this, they had it set in their minds that the "slaves" were not human at all and it was not wrong for them to do this.
