Many people confused, lonely, and depressed in life, which causes them to commit suicide. "The Center of Attention" by Daniel Hoffman and "My Sad Self" by Allen Ginsberg, are two poems, which have many similarities and a few differences. Firstly, the theme of loneliness is presented in both these poems. Moreover, there is some form or indication of suicide and hope or well being, presented by the two characters in these poems. Furthermore, the character in "The Center of Attention" has people focused on him and the character in "My Sad Self" focuses on the other people. The two poems "The Center of Attention" and "My Sad Self" have a similar theme, indication of suicide, and they have a different focus of attention.

Firstly, the theme of loneliness is present in both the poems "The Center of Attention" and "My Sad Self." The character in the poem, "The Center of Attention," is standing all alone on top of a bridge. This shows that he has no one to go to in life for help, no one to support him. He stands on the bridge looking down on the people searching for someone who cares about his attempt at suicide. In the poem, "My Sad Self," the character is also standing above everyone looking down on the city. He stands ther


e all alone looking at the city remembering the past. The character is lonely at this age because he talks about past lovers that he has lost, therefore making him feel lonely. The Author of "The Center of Attention," Daniel Hoffman, mentions that the character regrets not taking his furtive pills. This tells us that the character is lonely, other wise he would not try to avoid being noticed. He would want attention from other people. Allen Ginsberg, the author of "My Sad Self," writes about the character looking into other people faces analyzing them. This shows that the person is walking around mindlessly, which lonely people do. Evidently, Daniel Hoffman, and Allen Ginsberg, both incorporated the theme of loneliness in their poems.

Moreover, the two characters in the poem have some action or thought of suicide, and either have or had some sign of hope. The character in "The Center of Attention" actually almost commits suicide. This is evident when he is standing on top of a bridge and he shouts "I'm gonna jump!" This arouses a huge crowd of people and emergency personnel, just like suicide scenes would.
