After his extensive training at Fort Benning, Colin received his first oversea orders. Colin was to report to the 3rd Armored Division in West Germany. He went to Gelnhausen, where he was assigned as a platoon leader of company B, 2d Armored rifle Battalion, 48th Infantry. It was his first field command in charge of forty soldiers. Colin had the responsibility to take care of all his men and lead them to safety at all times. They were then assigned on a secret mission to guard a 280 military weapon from the Russians, a weapon that fired nuclear warhead. The war against the Russians was Colin's first front line experience and he was excited to be there. Colin Powell had accepted to serve his country at a time when the era of racism was strongly around and when military servants salary was only $258 a month, but Colin still felt that it was a place where he belonged and thus his journey into military history continued. He began his journey at Fort Benning, Georgia. Where he trained for the infantry in the military basic training (boot camp). During his training Colin had questioned his decision of his career in the military due to the rigorous training of exercise and scary stunts that had to be performed. Colin continued his training and later went on to ranger school. It was a two-month training for some of the Armies elite soldiers. Shortly after his completion of ranger training, Colin reported to airborne school for training. This kind of training meant for soldiers to jump out of a C-123 military airplane at very high altitudes. Despite Colin's physical condition at the time, battling with exhaustion, underweight and fighting a leg infection he was determined not to fall behind and continue training. Colin made five jumps in just two days. He rushed home to his wife and kids and moved to Washington, D.C. where he was to attend the Washington University for School O f Government and Business Administration. He was promoted to lieutenant Colonel. He then received his diploma after 2 years of graduate school and was eager to return back to the Army. He was assigned to a cubicle in the pentagon, working along with General Depuy. Shortly after, Colin was ordered by the Infantry Branch to fill out an application for a white house fellowship. Weeks later, Colin had been selected over more than 200 applicants. Colin's injury caused him to be reassigned to the 1st Arvin Division headquarters as an assistant advisor on the oparation staff. Shortly after his attachment to headquarters, Colin flew to Honk Kong to rest. After his rest, Colin went back to Saigon to end his tour a month earlier because they were doing so well in Vietnam. Colin had left Vietnam with new experiences and no disillusionments. As a Lieutenant, commanding battalion companies; a job usually hold by a higher ranking officer made Colin was very proud of himself and it gave him a much more interest to continue in the Army. Colin finally completed his mission of 2 years in Germany by 1960. From his departure in Germany Colin was headed to Fort Devens near Ayer, Massachusetts. His assignment was as a liaison officer in the battle group headquarters.
