The Stone Angel

How much pride you have in yourself? Does your pride ever effect your life dramiticly? Does your pride ever push everyone away from you, or damage the ones you love? In 'The Stone Angel' By Margeret Laurence, the character Hagar has too much pride in herself. Her pride pushes many people away and effects her life because she makes rash decesions, she is unable to demonstrate emotions and she spoils relationships.

To begin, Hagar's relationships are damaged because she makes rash decisions. She wants to marry Bram, but her father will not allow it to happen. She ends up marrying Bram because she has pride in herself to do what she wants, when she wants and she does not need advice from anyone. Her father says "You'll marry no one, not at the moment anyway. Your only Twenty-Four and you'll not marry that fellow ever, I can vow that much. He's common as dirt." (46) Another incident where pride damages Hagars relationships is when she runs away from Bram to Shadow Point. She does not like anyone telling her what to do and she does not want to be with Bram anymore. Hagar is in no shape at her age to run away, and she has no food, water or money. But she has too much pride in herself to be with Bram. Also, Hagar over reacts about


Third, Hagar's relationships are damaged because she spoils them. Hagar's father or Jason Currie did not think Bram was good enough for his daughter Hagar. "Lazy as a pet pig..no get up and go" (46). He also says "You'll marry no one, not at the moment anyway. Your only Twenty-Four and you'll not marry that fellow ever, I can vow that much. He's common as dirt." (46). But Hagar marry's Bram agaisnt her father's wishes which shows disrespect towards her father and she spoils that relationship. Also, Hagar spoils a relationship with Marvin when John was dying in the hospital from the car accident, John said to Hagar softly "You always bet on the wrong horse...Marv was your boy, but you never saw that did you? (237) John finally made Hagar realize that Marvin tried to do everything for Hagar all his life, and all he wanted was so recognition and comfort from his mother. It was too late to fix her relationship with Marvin at this point. Another relationship she spoils is John and Arlene's relationship, with the help of Lottie. Hagar and Lottie did not want John and Arlene to marry each other so they tried to prevent there marriage. Lottie and Hagar Tried very had to frusterate John and Arlene's love for each other and Lottie sent Arlene off East for the year which ended up not working and rui
