The Mission

The Mission.

The Catholic Church through the missions supported the European domination of the new world and during the 1750's where this movie took place. The influence that religion manifested in the indigenous created a new vision of life for them. The European government had its representation too; they were the Spaniards and Portuguese. These governments had their own interests that affected the indigenous. The archbishop was only a messenger for the religious community. These issues made the indigenous develop the strength to fight for their land with their lives.

The missioners that were settled in this part of South America had to work hard as was shown in the movie. This area was in the border of Paraguay and Brazil where the Spanish and Portuguese were trying to obtain that land. The Jesuits were the missioners in these areas and they offered protection to the indigenous. The indigenous in this land were the Guaranis who lived in the jungle. In the beginning they did not accept any foreigners. They went as far as killing one missioner who tried to teach them another way of life. However, this situation did not stop the other missioners in their work of e
