Outbreak

" The single biggest threat to man's continues dominance is the virus." In the movie Outbreak a hemorrhagic virus took the lives of many people in a matter of days. This deadly virus was called the Motaba virus. Even though the virus is so small compared to us it is amazing how it has the power to take down so many things that are so much larger than it self. The virus, the way it spreads, and the effect it has, directly relates to the material we have covered this year in biology.

The Motaba virus is a hemorrhagic disease in which your internal organs in a sense melt away which causes extreme internal bleeding. In the movie Outbreak the virus strikes in a small village at first and it kills its victims within 2-3 days. It attacks the immune system and multiplies very rapidly and all of your cells become infected. The virus directly infects humans because of the similarity between monkey and human genetics. Monkey and Human genetics are very similar when looking at and comparing their DNA. The reason why the virus transmitted so quickly to humans without having to mutate was because the DNA of humans and monkeys are so similar that there didn't have to be any mutations in the virus for it to survive in the

Once they find the host and take the antibody from it, they use it to make the vaccine and cure everyone in cedar creak. This is called passive immunity because they use the host's antibodies to make a vaccine for the humans. Passive immunity is when animal's antibodies are used to create a cure for the human. Antibodies are proteins contained in a plasma membrane, which can unite with an antigen to kill it. The antibody, which Sam got out of the host, worked to cure the people in Cedar Creek.

The pet shop owner was infected by the second strain, which he got by getting scratched by the monkey. He then went to the hospital and infected the doctor that was testing his blood. The doctor was splashed by the infected blood which then entered his blood stream. The doctor then infected a theatre full of people because he had the air born strand. This was when Sam, the military doctor, figured out that the virus mutated to become airborne. Originally in the pet shop another monkey ate a banana, which the host was eating so the new monkey was also infected. At the CDC (Center or Disease Control) they tried a vaccine called the E-1101, which the military was hiding so they could use the virus as a weapon. This only cured the first strain because the 2nd monkey got cured yet no one else in Cedar Creek was getting cured. This was because the second strand was the one that was infecting everyone is cedar creak
