'School Film's' Analysis
Teachers always bring change with them and Hollywood tried to capture this change in various movies about schools and teachers. "Dead Poets Society" (DPS) and "Stand and Deliver" (S&D) are two movies that showcase two different and simulatinsly similar stories about teachers who come with new ideals and principals for their students and face conflict that should be dealt with according to these ideals and principals. Dead Poets Society Stand and Deliver · set at Welton Academy for boys : scenes involving the teachers and students · set on-location at Garfield High in East LA. Most scenes 1. Mr. Keating: · the new English teacher · member of the old Dead Poets Society · follows unorthodox teaching methods.2. Todd Anderson: a new shy student. He tries to get out of his cocoon and succeeds at the end. 3. Neil Perry: an 'A' student who likes to participate in extra curricula activities like acting against his father's wish. He decides to follow his dream and pays dearly with his life.4. Charlie Dalton: a rebel student 5. Knox: the romantic whose goal is to win the affection of a girl from the town 6. Mr Nolan (the headmaster) and Mr Perry (Neil's father): advocate conformity. 1. Jaime
In DPS the music "chosen for particular scenes tends to add to the mood and setting. Each piece of music seems to come at a critical time in the movie" (Baker & Kemper 4) Setting can "dynamically enter the narrative action". It resembles the realty of the events but what might be real in the present may seem highly stylish to the audience in the future. (Bordwell & Thompson 159) For example, in DPS the scenery around the school is rich and plush which may seem flashy or romantic but they clearly resemble the reality at that time, as most of them are natural scenes, which are not duplicated by people. They reflect the background of the people in the movie; privileged, wealthy students. The same goes for S&D, the introductory scene puts the audience in the realty of East LA. It is a long take of what the director wants to say about East LA and the people who live here; it's "rough, and the people who live in that community are poor minorities" (Fortlewis 1) In S&D, different sets were used to show the realities of the students and the teacher as being opposite. Escalante lives in the 'white' neighbourhood with nice lanes and green grass and friendly neighbours who take walks around the block. His student's homes on the other hand are old, small, crowded in poor parts of the city. Lupe has to take care of her father's food and siblings at home. Angel goes around breaking rules with his buddy in the gang round town. Pancho is busy toying with cars in his backyard. All these sets tell the little details of everyday lives for these students and show how school can be a burden or an added baggage after all what they face at home. Again, the teacher and his students can be found in any set to show how close he is to his students; at his doorstep with angel, in the car with Pancho and with Ana in the restaurant. According to Figgins (1993) positive images of teachers are; the teacher as youthful idealist, the dedicated tough love teacher and the exceptional teacher for an exceptional situation (Sribbell() 1). Jaime in S&D can be called a dedicated tough love teacher who shows a workaholic behaviour as he nearly works himself to death (Kempley 1). One of his students said after he had his heart attack "we don't want him burning" and another one replied "it's burn out" and this shows how the students were able to relate to their teacher. He gives out his holidays and spare time to teach his students calculus in dire conditions during the heat and soaked with sweat.
