Paddy's Status at the end of the novel

In the novel Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, the author presents a ten year-old boy whose life is described day by day. It consists of the playground, the school, and his family matters. The story is told from the boy's point of view, where at the end of the novel his status is so different from the beginning.

First of all, Paddy feels in some way confused by what is happening between his parents, because he does not feel any hatred toward any of them. On the other hand he does not like or completely understand what he is witnessing. He always asks himself "why ma does not like ma? She liked him; it was him didn't like her. What was wrong with her?"(257) He hardly understands their love chemistry and how they interact with each other. In front of the children, his parents are rather silent and calm, but at night and in private, things seem to be different. Moreover, Paddy is also con


Secondly, Paddy has a feeling of emptiness that evolved after his fight with former friend Kevin. This following passage identifies his emotion facing what he is going through: "There was a hole inside me for a bit; getting used to it." He was on his own without anybody to turn to, because his friend refused to talk to him. They boycotted him at school, but he does not give a damn to try to overcome this situation, since he is living in his own world now. Even if he acts as if he does not care, somewhere deep inside of him, he doe not want to be completely isolated. Sinbad's presence would definitely fill if not all, part of the emptiness. This proves that Sinbad is part of his happiness even though Paddy does not always show it.
