Ender
The novel Ender's Game is the first in a series of stories involving Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, by Orson Scott Card. At the young impressionable age of six, Ender is taken from the only world he has ever known, to Battle School. Later on at Command School, on the planet Eros, the teachers prepare him for the final battle with the buggers. He is taught that the buggers are his enemy and he has to destroy them in order to save humanity. Throughout the series, Ender is an intriguing character who as a child is a genius, is wholeheartedly devoted to his sister, but acts violent in situations when threatened. Ender is a bright young boy, despite the fact that he is a third and was requisitioned by the government to be born. Because of his advanced knowledge he is often bored with school. On the day Ender got his monitor taken out he kept looking for something and was preoccupied, "The teacher would know, of course, that he wasn't paying attention, but she wouldn't bother him. He always knew the answer, even when she thought he wasn't paying attention" ( Ender's 5 ). He quit looking for whatever it was he couldn't remember and began to play with his computer, "It gave him something to do while the teacher droned on about arithmetic. Arith
Ender, like anyone is only threatening to others when threatened himself. His actions are not only violent but deadly. After his monitor is taken out he realizes that he is on his own and no one can help him face the bullies after school. He has to do it all alone, and he brutally beats the Stilson boy. "For a moment, the others backed away and Stilson lay motionless. They were all wondering if he was dead." (Ender's 7 ). Ender knew he had to win this battle once and for all but he, "... knew the unspoken rules of warfare, even though he was only six. It was forbidden to strike the opponent who lay helpless on the ground; only an animal would do that" ( Ender's 7 ). Ender thought about what he should do and he, "... walked to Stilson's supine body and kicked him again, viciously, in the ribs" ( Ender's 7 ). Ender actually killed him. This is just the start of several incidents that ultimately wind up with Ender killing another boy, and then being the xenocide of the buggers. The only difference that distinguishes Ender from Peter is that Ender feels remorse for the things he has done. After a fight in the null gravity room Ender conceives that he's, "... doing it again. I'm hurting people again, just to save myself. Why don't they leave me alone, so I don't have to hurt them?" ( Ender's 115 ). Ender even admits that, "All his crimes weighed heavy on him, the deaths of Stilson and Bonzo no heavier and no lighter than the rest" ( Ender's 309 ).The thing that troubles Ender the most is that he knew nothing about the buggers. Because humanity had no way of communicating with the buggers, it was believed that they were conspiring against them. People are often afraid of things they do not understand and as a result of this Ender killed an entire species. Ender has some rather puzzling traits that show his amazing intellect, the devotion he has to his sister, and the savagery he performs when in danger. I believe that Ender is a misunderstood character. He did what he did in order to
