"Heart of Darkness" vs. "Apocalypse Now"
A detailed Summary of "Heart of Darkness" vs. "Apocalypse Now"
"Heart of Darkness" vs. "Apocalypse Now"
The novel "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad written in 1902 and the movie "Apocalypse Now" by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979 are similar in many ways. Many of the settings and the plot of the movie are taken directly from the novel. Although there are many differences in general if you read the book and watch the movie you can tell they are much alike. Both the author of the book and the director of the movie use many of the same visual effects to accentuate the theme of the story. The movie is most definitely based around the novel and by reading and watching the two stories it is quite obvious that Francis Ford Coppola was a fan of the novel "Heart of Darkness".
In both stories the idea of light and dark plays a major role in the scenes. In the novel there are so many different descriptions of it being dark and dreary. The novel makes it seem that the trip on this river is one of the worst trips a man could have taken. The movie is based around the same concept. In the movie many of the scenes are very dark and even some of them are hard to see by someone watching the video. For example a major part of the movie that shows the light and dark is when Captain Williard meets Kurtz an

In the book and the movie I believe that Marlow and Captain Williard are losing pieces of themselves while taking this journey. In the book Marlow is constantly seeing black people being referred to as criminals or some other name in which doesn't even relate to these men. The men were slaves who had done nothing wrong except live their lives. I believe that Marlow has feelings for these men but doesn't really have an option but to see these men tortured in their own land. I think that Marlow begins to see a bigger picture of about how the white men are the same race as him and he loses some self respect because of this. In the movie Captain Williard has obviously lost respect for other men and woman because of the scene where he shoots the injured woman cold heartedly because he is on a mission and has to get to his destination. Captain Williard is very rude to his shipmates and is also very spiteful. I think that the title "Heart of Darkness" not only refers to where Marlow is traveling but also about he feels about his people and himself being of the same race. I think that it also means lost something by taking this journey.
The movie "Apocalypse Now" and the novel "Heart of Darkness are based upon the same idea. After reading the book and watching the movie you can definitely tell that Francis Ford Coppola us
