Stereotypinc
It started on February 13, 2001. I started working at the Pickle Barrel Restaurant a few blocks away from my house. It was a hostessing position. This job allows you to meet people, of different ethnic backgrounds/cultures, genders and ages. When I started working it was really important for me to make a good impression by my co-workers that is why I tried to listen to their requests as to what kind of customers they want. Then I started to notice a BMW pull in. I hear someone tread heavily with Armani shoes, black DKNY suit, and Ralph Lauren sunglasses over the stringy eyes. I then had an urge to itch my nose it was the smell of sushi (raw fish). Yes, it was the case of the Chinese customer. The noise has diminished in the restaurant from the waiters as they are pointing at them and whispering to me "put them somewhere else, not in my section". I always thought that the Chinese people are rich; they are always represented in designer clothing and seem very well oriented with their job and family. This impression is made through the media because in movies the Chinese are always represented by being smart, intelligent, and rich people. For example in the movie "Rush Hour 2" Jackie Chan is represented much more wiser and smarter th
These experiences put a lot into perspective for me and the way I think about others. This issue is very complicated even if there is some truth in it because I did find out that 2 people did not leave a 15% average gratuity but I realized that it is unfair to judge people. Even though in the end I found out that this stereotype is not true, opinions like that are all over world and I did not help anything by agreeing and telling other people that this is a fact before I researched more about this issue. This issue becomes complicated when people start talking to others and influencing them to believe something that is not a definite truth. The way that I cope with this issue is when someone at work mentions, "oh look it is another Chinese" I try to educate everyone of my findings and experiences and I try to change their view. Also, when I hear stereotyping going on I just do not join in on the conversation and I just leave so that I would not be influenced by what people say even if it is someone's opinion. So my suggestion to you is never judge a book by its cover. A wise person never judges but researches first. I finally decided to prove everyone wrong and took a survey. I calculated that out of 100 people that came to Pickle Barrel only 10 of them were the Chinese background and only 2 out of 10 people did not leave a proper gratuity of 15% to the waiter also, not a single person did not pay the bill. I came to realize then that the entire Chinese population were stereotyped based on someone's misunderstanding of the Chinese descent. A couple of months later, I went on vacation to Philadelphia where I went to visit my cousin's. One of the people that my cousin was a friend to happened to be Chinese. Due to the fact that I was new to the state their Chinese friends
