What is an addiction? An addiction is when a person cannot control the extent to which that person engages in the activity or just how much of the drug they consume. Addiction can also mean the person will continue to abuse the substance despite the obvious harm they are causing to their bodies.

The psychological dependence on alcohol can seriously damage or harm the individual in many ways. A person dependant on alcohol may not be able to function on every day activities, such as: spending time with family or friends, going to work or school. The person may continue to use alcohol for immediate gratification regardless of their welfare. That person becomes so involved in their immediate gratification that the ramifications of what they are doing to themselves doesn't matter. Often, a psychological addiction is so overwhelming that the person can feel discomfort or panicked if they are held back from their drinking.

It was thought at one point by some that alcoholics had a personality disorder resulting in their heavy drinking but experts in the field of alcoholism no longer believe that theory is true. Even though alcoholics tend to share some common personality traits such as low tolerance for frustration, low self-esteem, poor sexual identity and feelings of isolation and loneliness it does not mean it is a personality disorder. Many people can feel these same feelings even if they are not alcoholics, and not all alcoholics suffer form these traits after drinking. It is also believed alcoholism develops because of unresolved psychological conflict that occurs during childhood. Alcoholism arises because the person tries to deal with the anxiety that comes from the past. Yet, alcoholism may arise due to the fact that the person may be addicted to the feeling of being intoxicated simply because their mood brightens and makes them feel happy or loving.

There are different types of alcoholics, one type of alcoholic is the primary alcoholic, this is a person who shows symptoms of alcoholism when they first begin to drink. Secondary alcoholics are people who may start out as non-alcoholics but begin to drink more and more to help cope with physical or emotional problems. The alcohol is supposed to provide comfort from chronic pain, anxiety, depression, or insomnia. After a prolonged period of consumption the drinker becomes dependant on alcohol.
