Revenge in Hamlet
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet revenge plays a large role in the development of Fortinbras, Laertes, and Hamlet. These three men are all looking to avenge their father's deaths. Although each of them vow to seek revenge, their individual methods and ideologies differ. Their decisions, and ultimately their fate, are also influenced by the ideas of others. With an underlining emphasis on honor Fortinbras, Laertes and Hamlet all strive towards one common goal. The central action of the play revolves around the three main families. The family of King Fortinbras, the family of Polonius, and the family of King Hamlet. With the death of the father in each family the task of revenge is placed upon their sons. It becomes their duty to restore honor to their individual families and murder, in the time which the play is set, is a respectable means of doing so. Their response to this responsibility and their individual motivation to act differs among them.
