The Crucible

People sometimes let their pride get in the way of doing what is right, and allow bad things to happen just because they are too proud to stop them. In Arthur Miller's novel The Crucible he demonstrates the human trait of pride through many characters such as Judge Danforth, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams. Danforth, Parris and Abigail are all too proud to come forth and stop the witch trials before they get out of control. Danforth, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams all fear the witch trials will get out of hand, but are too proud to stop the trials.

Judge Danforth is too proud to admit that the court has misjudged several innocent people. Hale tells Danforth that the girls are lying to the court meaning that the ruling of witchcraft against the accused is wrong. So to protect his pride he denies the girls are lying and chooses to believe them. Instead of listening to Hale and stopping the hangings Danforth proceeds with the hangings and says, "Hang them high over town! Who weeps for these, weeps for corruption!" When Proctor tries to expose what is really going on in the witch trials Parris says that Proctor is lying and that this accusation against Abigail is just Proctor's way of getting Parris thrown out of town. Parris in trying to get Danforth to stop believing Proctor he plays off of Danforth's pride by telling him, "This is a clear attack upon the court!" Knowing that that Danforth will consider Proctor an enemy of the court, and that it will put Parris back in the court's favor. Parris being too proud to admit he was wrong lets the witch trials get out of hand.

Abigail is too proud to admit that she lied about being a witch, which would stop the whole witch-hunt. Abigail is so proud that even when Danforth asks her if she was pretending that she was a witch she gets mad. Danforth as
