A detailed Summary of Roman Empire


Gladiator came from the Latin word gladius, which meant 'sword'. The majority of the gladiators were primarily slaves condemned criminals, prisoners of war, and sometimes Christians. But some freemen also just chose this path mostly in spite of the results of the sport. This would include the gladiator's profit from his wins, supreme popularity or fame, or the applause from the crowd that was appealing to him. At the developing stages of these event of the "Roman Blood-sport", woman and dwarfs were allowed into these games when the emperor Domitian in 90 A.D. presented these types of combats. This was banned later.

The gladiating games were given the name "Roman Blood-Sport" because of the outcomes of the fights meaning the battle ended in death. The first games were held in Rome in 264 B.C. at the funeral honoring Marcus and Decimus Brutus' father where only three pairs of gladiators fought. This is how the gladiating era of sports began or started (during funerals), but later in time, it would grow extremely popular like in 174 B.C. when 37 pairs participated at a 3-day event. The coliseums or colosseums, in that time period, could fit up to over 80,000 people depending on how spaced they were. The spectators who came to watch the events had some strange enjoyment as the men participating in the battle were brutally murdered and slaughtered. If a man's head were decapitated, the crowd would cheer; if a man would go through daring fleets in air and nearly escaping death to be hacked in half by a chariot, the crowd would roar. Anything that would surprise or astound the crowd in a coercive or intense manner, they would love it. Usually when a struggle came to where a choice was made where whether a gladiator's life should be killed or spared at the end ofthe battle, the crowd would wish the outcome. If the crowd wanted a man to die, they would respond to the victor showing him a thumbs down; if they wished him to live, they would respond with excessive waving and cheering and shouting. Usually the victor was a man of supreme importance such as the occasional emperor who would come sometimes surrounded by men or soldiers that would make him seem powerful. He would announce the crowd's choice of the man's sentence by rumor of him positioning his thumb up or down that would mean life or death. That is why many of the gladiators depended on the approval or entertainment of the crowd to save their lives if it all came down to choice.
