Deeper Levels of Thinking

Society defines world-class fiction as creating a particular setting and characters through which the author explores deep levels of human reality or experience. I believe that Nevil Shute's novel, On the Beach, is world-class fiction, for these reasons: the novel explores the human reality of family life; the novel shows the reality of a new couple's relationship; and the novel lets one man experience his dream.

First, Shute explores the human reality of family life through the family of Peter and Mary Holmes. In the Holmes' family, everyone looks out for everyone else. Right before Peter's long naval voyage, he discusses with his wife, Mary, what she must do n case the radiation reached Melbourne before his return. This type of thought is not common in our everyday lives; people in the Holmes' setting need to think about things like how to commit suicide if the pain is too unbearable. At the end of the novel, Peter is at home with his family when th

On the Beach shows us many different ways of considering other levels of human reality. Shute used a family and a new couple's relationship to show the different levels of human reality. He also let readers see how one man could experience his dream. Shute used these characters to explore deep levels of human reality or experience. Nevil Shute is definitely a world-class fiction writer.

Third, the author lets one of his characters experience his life-long dream. John Osborne is a scientist who Moira described as "dippy... absolutely mad" (On the Beach by Nevil Shute, pg 50). Shute makes Osborne appear an intellectual scientist who has a hidden passion. John's passion is automotive racing. His life-long dream is to win the Grand Prix. The situation that he is in allows him to follow through with his dream. John acquires a Ferrari and won the Grand Prix. It is note worthy to see that he decides, and follows through with his dream.
