The Drama of a Gifted Child
William Warde Fowler has written many books on major historical events or happenings, and his credibility on each book is factual and informative. I chose Fowler's book Rome because he shares his knowledge of Roman culture, which many of his topics in his book of our topics we discussed in class. "I have not attempted to make any alterations save in those places where statements of fact needed modification in the light of newer knowledge, or where certain topical allusions would now seem out of date", a quote from the author suggests the book allows basic understanding of the Romans. The author writes this book with the thought in mind that the common person does not have a tremendous amount of knowledge about the Roman lifestyle and the Roman culture. The historical importance provides informatory information about the Roman Empire including several Greek influences and contrasts on the Romans. Fowler's states, "It is true that history of the two peoples is best looked at as one great whole;
there is a general likeness in their institutions; the form of the State, and the ideas of the government, with which each grew to maturity, were in the main the same"(5). He says in contrast of the Greeks the Roman's mental development was much slower forming than of the Greeks. The historical importance of this book allows the audience to focus on the Roman character, the Revolution, Augustus- the Revival of the Roman Spirit and Empire, and concluding the Empire under Antonines. Fowler explains that "discipline and duty" best explain the Roman character and Roman family. He emphasizes the great quality of the Roman character and can made a constant and lasting exercise of other generations. "The habit of obedience to authority, which is the necessary condition of the power of governing, and that sense of duty which lies at the root of the habit and the power.
