Dead Poets Society: Life in General

?I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life.. I did not wish to live what was not life... nor did I whish to practice resignation... I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.?

Henry David Thoreau used this as an explanation for his leaving civilization and going to live in the depths of the forest all by himself. As a well-known transcendentalist writer, his views of life, the human mind, body, and soul are greatly respected by all of the idealist and transcendentalist thinkers of our time, and the time past. Mr. Keating, the primary character in the film, ? Dead Poet?s Society?, was a firm believer in the teaching of transcendentalisms. In the film ?Dead Poet Society?, this idealistic professor enters the highly recognize private school, Chilton. Being an idealistic professor and entering a school in which ?Discipline, Excellence, Tradition, and Perseverance? were the schools motto was not a very logical decision. Nevertheless, Mr. Keating was an English teacher with a goal; this goal was to open a new world to these students at Chilton. He wanted them to be independent, to be able to think for themselves, and not to conform into society?s beliefs.

That you are here-- that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.?

Tradition and excellence two words which the students at Chilton were very familiar with. The truth is that these students were so use to giving into societies beliefs (in this case their parents and professors expectations) that when introduced to a new way of life many of them did not know how to reach to it. Some like Finch (the red haired boy who was hit in the face by Newanda for snitching), never took it seriously. He was a firm believer in realist believes. Throughout the whole story he sees this as a joke and goes along with it just because his friends want him to not because really believes in it. Other students tried to practice their newfound philosophy of life. They found out that the only way to actually discover their true self was by being true to themselves and doing whatever they want not what everybody else wants them to do. These students did in fact put these lessons, taught by Mr. Keating, into use. For example when Neil applied to the play because he realized that he really loved acting and did not want to be a doctor like his father whished him to be. Or when Nock decided to take a risk and pursue a relationship with the girl of his dreams. Both of these are examples of how some students applied their transcendentalist believes, which had been taught by Mr. Keating, into real life. However, the outcomes could be considered tragic; for the girl had a boyfriend and the boys father would not even consider letting his boy act, therefore the this boy killed himself. The fact is that even though the end results where tragic these students where able to apply the lessons taught by Mr. Keating to real life. Because if they had never done what they did they would have never truly lived life, they would have been just one of the many spectators of life who watch it pass by them and miss all the golden opportunities that life has to offer. ?when I came to die, discover that I had not lived?

Those are the words that Finch said right before he was hit on the face by Newanda, one of his fellow Dead Poet Society?s member. By this point in the film I was ready to judge the transcendentalist views as naive and impractical. The students had already tried to apply these idealistic believes into real life; by creating the Dead Poets Society, and going after what they really wanted; but nevertheless, it seemed like they had failed. It seemed like the transcendentalist views of live appeared very well on paper but in reality they were not applicable. With a boy dead, because he had stood up for what he really believed, Mr. Keating fired, and the rest of the boys giving into soci
