Solomon Northup was born in New York in July of 1808. Solomon's father was a slave until his master granted him his freedom in his will. On Christmas day 1829, Solomon married Anne Hampton. He and his wife made a life for themselves at the Eagle Tavern by cooking, fiddling and farming. During the day he worked at a hotel and by night he was a violinist. In March 1834, they moved to Saratoga Springs. During there time in Saratoga, Anne gave birth to three children- Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alonzo.
