Hearst castle

A detailed Summary of Hearst castle

I recently had the opportunity to visit Hearst Castle over the summer. I took a couple of the tours which included several of the rooms, the gardens, the pools and the guest houses. A brief history of the castle was explained on the bus trip to the top of the castle. There is a great deal of historic significance behind the making of Hearst Castle.

What is now referred to as Hearst Castle began over 100 years ago. A wealthy miner acquired the land and it was his son who designed the castle and all of its embellishments. The castle is well known for its history and its impressive collection of art, artifacts and antiquities from around the world.

George Hearst, a self-made millionaire in the mining business acquired the 48,000 acre known as Piedras Blancas Ranch in 1865. George did not receive a formal education but he learned a great deal about the mining business from his father. His knowledge of the mining business brought him great success as he owned interest in three of the largest mining discoveries in America: the Comstock Lode in Nevada, the Ontario silver mine in Utah and the Anaconda copper mine in Montana. His successes enabled him to also acquire the adjoining ranches of Santa Rosa and San Simeo

In addition, to his elaborate rooms, gardens and pools William also fancied animals. During his days at the castle William had zebra, emus, tigers, bears and lions on the premises. Today zebra can still be seen wondering the hillsides.

Now, as the castle is used for historical purposes, the staff of the castle have a pool party once a year in the Neptune pool.

Hearst Castle was never fully completed as William had to leave San Simeon for medical reasons. But during the construction, William and architect Julia built a castle of 165 rooms, 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. Of which all include ancient artifacts from statues of Egyptian gods to tapestries from Asia. The castle was donated to the state of California in 1957 as a historic house and museum. People who visit can take tours of the castle and watch videos of the castle, which include pictures of Hollywood's famous stars. Hearst Castle is historic because of the different cultures it represents; the art, statues, architecture, rugs, tapestries, mosaics and other antiquities.

Every room is adorned with art treasures; antique ceilings, rare rugs and Greek vases that date back to 700 B.C.. The castle is very large scale, with arched doorways, massiv
