Lord of the Flies

Themes statements Golding's view Support

1. The most natural form of government is democracy. Disagree a. In "Lord of the Flies", the most natural form of government is not democracy. Instead it is anarchy. That is demonstrated when the constraint of civilizations are no longer in effect, the boys naturally convert or succumbed to anarchical government under Jack.

b. The natural form of government is not democracy because not long after they crashed, Jack's anarchical government was able to rally more support and subsequently crush the democratic government of Ralph. Had the natural form of government been democracy, a complete victory by Jack's anarchical government would not have been possible. People will still remain loyal to democracy. However, the book clearly demonstrates that this was not the case.

2. Children need adult in order to survive. Disagree a. The children themselves do not need adult in order to survive. This is because the boys, even though they are only 6 - 12 years old, are well-educated enough to know how

b. In an anarchical society, like the one which Jack constructed, intelligence is even considered a threat to its leader. This is because its leaders use fear, religion, ignorance in Man, etc in order to gain control over their people. However, science or intelligence, in a way can easily prove these things to be false and jeopardize the leader's positions and control over their people. That's why (I think) Golding wrote such that Jack and Piggy were arch-enemies and when Jack took control Piggy was murdered.

5. Circumstances/environment alters morality. Agree a. Yes, I think Golding does agree with this. When he wrote "Lord of the Flies", he chose an island for the boys to be crashed into due to its unique circumstances/environment - which is the fact that it is cut off from rest of the world. In this way, the boys have to fend for themselves and they are severed from the reaches of civilization. Evidently this had dramatic impact on their morality. Upon their arrival, they were still "fresh" in their moral ways and still behaved lik
