Our perception of how we see and understand things constantly alters and reforms. Time and experience allow us to develop and alter these perceptions: of people, events, ideas, and even of ourselves. This process we go through is called "change". Most of the time we are not overly conscious of this process occurring but, nonetheless, it does. Along with this constant change, humans seem to need a sense of stability and continuity. There is a need for some things to remain "the same", giving us a sense of continuity. We gain a sense of security from this ability to recognize the continuity visible in our past. At the same time, movement from this recognizable place gives us a sense of progress. This constant interaction between the forces of continuity and alteration is what reveals to us the process of change. Through the texts studied in Area of Study, we come to see examples of how this process comes about and learn to recognize and value it. So change and continuity, we soon realize, co-exist and are dependent on each other and reveal to us our own values.
