Television and News

1) The influence on TV on political process is unmistakable. In America the number of people who get their news through television rises steeply. In 1960 it was found out, that people who watched Kennedy on the TV had made a good impression of him and the ones who listened to the presidential campaign debates of Nixon on the radio had inclined toward Nixon. The Roper Organisation discovered in 1984, that 51% got their news trough television, 31% through newspapers and 18% through other sources.

2) TV news conveys 'a feeling of immediacy with a sense of being "on the spot" and involved in the action.'(l 12) and you could say that it connects 'timeliness with visual excitement'(l 11). Because of that it can create a sense of confidence. Another advantage of TV is that everybody is informed at the same time. For example 90% of the nation was informed within an hour of John F. Kennedy's assassination. It's maybe also positive that you only get the facts even if it is a very compressed story. It is handy that you get informed very quickly.

3) The two statements "The big problem is that TV news producers like pictures" (Neil Hickey) (l.22) and "The range of visual images...is surprisingly narrow."(Kidder) (l. 23) are, as I see it, a

Let's take TV for example. It's nice to watch, because you get animated pictures, sometimes even music, and these things give you feelings, but they can also give you wrong impressions. Maybe you will understand the news better, because of the pictures, which is, of course, a good thing, but because of the pictures you have to concentrate, and because of that, you haven't got the time to build your own opinion. Thus, it is a permanent contrast of advantages and disadvantages. It's for sure an advantage that everybody is informed at the same time, but you can see and hear the news on TV only once. Thus, it's bad luck for you if you don't understand a word or a sentence, because the news presenter won't repeat it for you. It's also not good, that you only get the facts without details and that you have to hear the whole stuff also the things you don't like. I think children should not watch the news on TV, because they often bring terrible things and you see a lot of dead people, violence, and crying women with their children. These things could give kids the wrong ideas, for instance that killing is a normal thing in our world. But a very positive aspect of TV news is that they are always up-to-date.
