The Scarlet Letter
A detailed Summary of The Scarlet Letter
In the novel, "The Scarlet Letter", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, some of the characters change in different ways. There are three characters in the novel that I think change the most, and they are Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. All three characters change into different people and they may become better or worse people.
At the beginning of the novel, you can tell that Hester is beginning to change. She starts to become stronger and her attitude changes. Hester's attitude becomes much more rebellious. Hester had to wear an "A" on her chest that represented the sins she committed of adultery. She became stronger and made the "A" more elegant for other people to see, but others did not think it should look nice. Others believed that the letter on her chest should look ugly and worn out to make Hester look like scum. As the novel goes on, Hester becomes even stronger and feels better about herself. Hester shows this by the way she acts and how she is helping others like the poor and the sick people a

Hester, Chillingworth, and Dimmmesdale all change their character a lot throughout this novel. Hester became more of a person and ended up feeling better about herself and had the courage to be in front of people no matter what they thought of her. Chillingworth was a good person until he let revenge and hatred ruin his life. Dimmesdale waited seven long years to change and to be able to confess his sins to everyone. All three characters changed in good and bad ways, but the changes the characters went through made them sound more real to the reader.
round her. She even supports herself which helps her attitude. Later in the novel Hester shows a different side of her by taking control of everything she wants. She takes control of her family, plans for an escape, and tries to get a life with her family and the man she wants to be with. Hester became a better person and much more independent as the novel went on.
