Summary of the Epilogue in Eric Schlosser

In "Epilogue: Have it Your Way", a section in the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser writes that some people are not submitting to the cheap production of meat. He also explains how the meat sold overseas goes through more extensive tests than the United States, to assure that there is no contamination in the meat. He explains how the fast food restaurants, McDonald's especially, have control over the farmers, and the slaughter houses. McDonald's can have them produce the meat by any means they want but they still allow them to produce it the cheapest (most unsafe), way possible.

Schlosser tells how certain cattle ranches, such as Tom Lasater's in Matheson, Colorado, do not resort to feeding their cattle with fattening grain. They allow the cattle to feed on the grass o


f the prairies, which is healthier for the cattle, and the consumer. There are also certain fast food restaurants out there that do not submit to the same cheap, speedy production, as McDonald's. In-N-Out pays its workers a starting rate of $8 per hour. Full time employees get a benefits package, with medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. The food quality, value, service, atmosphere, and cleanliness have all been ranked number one in Restaurants and Institutions in 2000. The lowest quality food of any major hamburger chain was served at McDonald's.

The whole point of this chapter is to show the other side of the fast food industry. Schlosser shows that there are still people who are not in it for the money, but for the quality. These ranchers such as Tom Lasater,
