A detailed Summary of Struggle for Heritage


The issue of immigrants conforming to their new country's lifestyles and laws has always been debated. When a person or family first arrives in a new country, it is a hard decision whether he or she should adapt and become like everyone else living there or hold on to his or her heritage and stand out as different. This is the dilemma presented in the article "Lost Sweden: A Kurdish Daughter is Sacrificed."

In the news story, Fadime Sahindal and her family have immigrated from Kurdisan to Sweden for a better life. However, many problems faced them by living in a new country with a new lifestyle and views. One of the problems that arouse, as with many immigrant families was that Fadime began to fit in with the Swedish lifestyle that her parents didn't approve of or understand. At this point Fadime had a hard choice between either her family and their values, or to fall in love


Fadime's father purposely shot and killed her because of the decisions she made. This was an extreme example, but it is the same type of issue that affects immigrant families everywhere. The older generations cleave to their heritage and values while the younger generations embrace the new lifestyle. The younger generations are able to adapt to their surroundings and are more open minded. This type of family structure can be seen in many countries, including the United States.

One of largest problems overall for immigrants that can effect generations to follow is whether to conform or hold onto their heritage. There are benefits and downfalls to both sides. If a family can resist the change brought by the new country, they are looked at strange or even stereotyped with racism. They do not fit in with society or able to function in everyday life.
