A detailed Summary of United States Before 1860


A perfect nation would be one that lacked nothing and was complete in all aspects of her society. The United States since the 1830's has experienced much change. Her society has many good people and structures, but it also has its corrupt criminals. To say that the United States had created a perfect society is impossible. She may have many social structures set up for her people to follow that are perfectly established, but the law that governs us and the proper etiquette her people should learn and obey was not always followed in the period before 1860. Civil disobedience, lack of women's rights, and slavery are negative attributes of society according to documents C, F, and H. The ideals for equality, the increasing availability of education, and the impression our country made on other countrymen were positive attributes according to documents A, D, and E.

In document C, Henry David Thoreau states that any man could go to jail if he is "not with her, but against her (the State)". There were


many criminals at this period in the United States because there were many controversial issues that people made different decisions about. Sometimes if these decisions were not parallel to the States then men would go to jail like the "fugitive slave, and the Mexican prisoner on parole, and the Indian". During this time period women's rights were an issue as well. In document F the Seneca Falls Declaration of 1848 states the "injuries and usurpations on the part of man toward woman". Women could not vote, had to obey laws they had no control over, and had no rights to land or wages. Another negative aspect of society before 1860 was the issue of slavery. Racism was very powerful and even after 1860 is still a problem, which resulted in such groups as the Ku Klux Klan, formed in the late 1860s and 1870s.
