"Heart of Darkness?E written in the late nineteenth century, reveals to the reader the colonial attitudes of the time regarding race. The black Africans are disempowered and dehumanised. The white Europeans do this through their representation. The reader is prompted to acknowledge and oppose the black Africans?Emarginalisation by the white society.
The white society is represented as empowered through their treatment of the dark-skinned Africans. The Europeans explored the globe, and colonised other lands, considering it their right. The Europeans then used the natives to plunder the invaded country of its natural resources. The white worsted around the neck of the steamer's boiler man is a symbol of white power. The necktie could be interpreted as the hands of white civilisation choking the natives of their culture, individuality or resources. "This bit of white thread from beyond the seas: could also symbolise the fact that the Africans felt the only way they could overcome their disempowerment would be to dress and behave like the European colonisers. The extent of white European power is underscored by the fact that even through they treated the natives as barbarians; the Africans still felt they had to imitate Eu
