Saving Private Ryan
The movie Saving Private Ryan is not your typical World War II movie. It is about the triumph of the United States over Germany but rather the focus on how horrific the effects of war are on those participating, not only physically but also mentally. What I liked about this film is the fact that it is not the plot that brings the emotions of the audience but the scenes of war and the interactions and dialogue of the soldiers involved. From this movie we get as close to a first hand portrayal of what took place for those whom participated in World War II. We also get a aspect of war that has never been portrayed on film before. We know that lives are lost during war and we hear how some of these deaths occur but we rarely see such a vivid display of some of the horrifying ways of how casualties and human loss are taken. The movie takes place during the Second World War. Our first vivid images of the movie take place during the D-Day invasion of Normandy by U.S. troops on Omaha beach. The images of war on the beach are horrific as soldier after soldier is mowed down at the hands of German artillery. Soon after the opening war sequence we are transported to the home front where we learn of the dea
I have explained two aspects of the movie, which I believe to be the most critical parts in the making of this movie. The physical aspect of war is one. The showing of death and destruction leaves a stunning account of warfare to those who have seen the film. Secondly we have the interaction of the individual soldiers. The stress and effects of battle are apparent in the soldiers at times in the movie. From watching the first aspect of the film we can relate and understand how the second aspect comes to be and why the reactions to certain situations are created and why they are dealt with in some of the unconventional ways that were explained. If as an audience member, we are horror-struck by the scenes of war that are portrayed on the screen we must try to view the reactions of those participating in the war, as related to the second aspect, by remembering that these were things people witnessed first-hand and had to react to in a different nature because of their obvious closer proximity. We must realize that the closer proximity to such devastation takes a profound toll on those living through such an event. So we, as the audience, can be appalled and shocked of the realness of the film we have just seen but at the same time we must not forget that there are those who did not have the luxury of watching this action and human interaction on the silver screen for there are those who lived and died in similar fashion.
