Madame Bovary9

A detailed Summary of Madame Bovary9

To become a villain, you need to commit evil acts. The New Webster's Dictionary defines a villain as a scoundrel or criminal. The closest thing to a villain in Madame Bovary is Lheureux, a dry-goods salesman in Yonville. He is overcome by the same desire of Felix Grandet in Eugenie Grandet, money. He might not be a criminal, but he is definitely characterized well by the word scoundrel.

Lheureux is a dry-goods sales man in the small French town of Yonville. His passion is for money and for money alone, and will go to great lengths to achieve an abundance of it. He has a strange relationship with Emma Bovary. Emma purchases many goods from Lheureux and runs up a very large tab in doing so. Lheureux realizes that Emma's semi-obsession with buying things can lead to a profit somewhere along the way for himself.

When the Bovarys get into financial problems, Lheureux knows that he can capitalize here. He has that same kniving attitude that Felix Grandet did in Eugenie Grandet. Felix was the epitamy of a miser in a small French town. Although Lheureux wasn't really characterized as a miser, they definitely shared the same love for money, which made them both villains in their respected novels, because their attitudes changed.

To say that Lheureux is a villain, is somewhat incorrect because what Emma did, she put it upon herself. The debt didn't come out of nowhere. Emma made the bill how big it was. Lheureux's attitude and strategy definitely didn't help though. His antics were definitely part of the problem also. His pursuit of money, and his ruthless attitude made him a villain in Madame Bovary.
