Cuban Missile Crises Interview
For my Cuban missile crises interview I interviewed one of my uncles friends from back east, His name is Gordie Morris. Mr. Morris explained how for thirteen days the world held its breath, people didn't plan for the next day, and instead they planned minute by minute. Mr. Morris was a cryptographer on the USS Boston, flagship of the Navy's 6th Fleet, during the missile crisis in 1963. At the time, he was barely one year out of college however he was the individual responsible for decoding intelligence messages transmitted in code and then delivering them to the Admiral in command, not only and important job but top secret also. Though my Mr. Morris memory gets shaky at times, as is prone to happen to middle age Gelfmen, he remembers very clearly the events of the weeks leading up to the Cu
When he wasn't on duty, he'd spend time on deck participating in typical naval life. Since was Morris's ship was in the Dardanelles, he happened to be in the vicinity of the Soviet ships loaded with missile parts en route to Cuba. As is customary in the Navy, Mr. Morris claims it is a tradition, with an origin unknown to him, that when a ship of another nationality passes by, one ship dips its flag to salute, and then the saluted ship returns in kind. However, while all the naval protocol was being observed by the people in charge of protocol, a whole other group of navy men was surreptitiously taking pictures of the passing ships, trying to identify the weaponry on board.
