Prime of Miss Jean Brody

A detailed Summary of Prime of Miss Jean Brody

In the book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie the reader is introduced to an interesting relationship that develops between the two main characters of the book, Miss Brodie and Sandy. For the most part the story is told from the perspective of when Sandy and the other girls are still in school, but occasionally slips forward into an era akin to the present tense where we are given perspective on the events that occur.

It is in one of these instances of flash forward that the reader is introduced fairly early on in the book to the knowledge that one of Miss Brodie's girls has betrayed her. By the end of the book it becomes very apparent that it was none other than Sandy who betrayed her, which leaves the reader with the important dilemma of figuring out why she would. The relationship that Miss Brodie developed towards Sandy was a very important one, es

pecially to Miss Brodie herself because Sandy became her closest and possibly only confidante. Strangely these two characters seem to be the opposite character traits of a single person; Miss Brodie is the idealistic and emotional side and Sandy is the calm, rational, and objective side. The answer to the question of betrayal is most easily answered by a close examination of the concluding few pages of the book. Sandy and Miss Brodie's final talk give a clue to the question when Miss Brodie becomes overly concerned with who it was that betrayed her. Sandy's reply was, "'If you did not betray us it is impossible that you could have been betrayed by us. The word betrayed does not apply...'" The insinuation here is that Sandy believes two things: that Miss Brodie has betrayed the girls and because of this there was no faulting the one that put a stop
