Minorities and Diabetes

Diabetes effects a lot of people in the united states. 15.7 million people have diabetes in the united states. That means that 5.9% of are population has diabetes. 10.3 million people are diagnosed with diabetes and 5.4 million are undiagnosed with diabetes. Unfortunately there are 798,000 new diagnoses a year. Diabetes seems to effect people that are 65 or older the most. 18.4% of people that are 65 or older have diabetes. People that are between the ages 20 and 64 are half as likely to have diabetes as someone older than 65. Also in the united states women are more likely than males to have diabetes. 8.1 million women have diabetes and 7.5 million man have diabetes. With all these tragic statistic some are still wondering what is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body doesn't make enough of a hormone called insulin, or the body doesn't use insulin the right way. Insulin is responsible for regulation of blood glucose. Blood glucose is much need because that is what is used to make energy. There are four different types of diabetes. The first type of diabetes is called insulin-dependent mellitus or juvenile onset diabetes. The development of type 1 diabetes is caused by environmental fa


In diabetes African-American omen's health is says "There is a genetic component that places ethnic minorities such as African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians at higher risk(46)." Staten that genetics has something to do with why minorities are at a higher risk of diabetes. I t also say that another factor is the higher rate of obesity in minorities mainly African Americans. Even though genetics play a big factor there are also environmental factors such as life style.

Minorities have to face problems when it comes down to getting the right care. Minorities have barriers that they face finically, culturally, and logistically. There is a large portion of minorities that don't even have primary physicians meaning they go to different doctors all the time. Most minorities are either uninsured or partly insured when they need to be fully because for the treatment needed for diabetes. 45% of Hispanics, 41% of Asians, and 35% African Americans have trouble paying for the proper health care. If minorities aren't getting the basic care think about the ones that need to receive special care because they have serous diabetes. They really want get that. The total cost of diabetes in 1997 was 98 billion including direct and indirect cost only in the united states.

The main problem with diabetes is the complications that it cause. The main complication with diabetes is heart disease because that is the leading cause of deaths related to diabetes. Stroke is another and it is two to four times higher with people that have diabetes rather than people who don't have diabetes. Most people that have diabetes have high blood pressure between 60% and 65%. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people age 20 to 74. Each year there 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness.
