The First World War ended with the Treaty of Versailles going into effect, followed by the Great Depression, collecting German aggression on new limitations, Italian hostility, and Japanese belligerence. Pre World War II conditions were favorable for extremist leadership which wanted revenge on the rest of the world. "In 1919 the leaders of the Allies met at the Palace of Versailles to decide on the peace settlement after the Great War. The decisions that they took were going to influence Europe for the next twenty years. Some people believe that these decisions led to the outbreak of another world war twenty years later" (Portland 1). It was signed on June 28, 1919 at the Palace of Versailles and went into effect on January 10, 1920 after being signed by Germany and four of the Allied Powers, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan. In 1894-95, the Sino-Japanese War started off a long span of Japanese hostility. The war was based mainly on interests over Korea, and the newly modernized Japanese military destroyed the Chinese military leaving them only with an appalling defeat. This war was only the beginning of Japanese interests in other countries. Russian belligerence with Korea in 1900 led to the Japanese defeating the Russians in less than a year and a half in Manchurian War. Japan became the first Asian Nation to successfully challenge a European power. From the Japanese and Russian war, Japan was given most of Manchuria and gained total domination over Korea, which led to their annex in 1910. Japan withdrew from the League of Nations due to a dispute the over control of Manchuria. Many attempts from the military to overthrow the Japanese government failed, but on February 26, 1936, Prime Minister Saito Makoto and many statesmen were murdered. Eventually the military gained control in 1937(Hanson 154). Japan signed an Anti-Comintern Pact allying them with Germany and Italy. In 1940 the Pact was replaced with the Tripartite Pact, which made Japan a part of the Axis Alliance. Japan's continued expansion into China and the United States freezing assets and invoking an oil embargo led to the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Japanese offensives were successful until the British and Americans defeated them on the Coral Sea and again near Midway in Europe (Hanson 154-155).

Hitler repeatedly violated and condemned the Treaty of Versailles. He reinstated the draft and started rebuilding the military. In defiance of the Treaty of Versailles he sent a mass of 35,000 troops to reoccupy the Rhineland, the area between France and Germany. With no French reply, he then continued on with the signs of outward aggression. By signing a treaty with Japan and Italy, the Axis Alliance was created in 1937 (Bloomberg 16-17).

The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939. World War I and the treaties that ended the vast prosperity as seen is pervious years and brought forth a decade of struggle. World War I production was booming due to the needs for the War, but afterwards, The Treaty of Versailles created an imbalance in the global economy, making Germany very poor compared to England and France, which became richer due to war repayments.
