short story

Jon was out walking in the forest behind his house like he usually did after dinner. Giant tree limbs far above him swayed in synchronization with the faint howling of the wind. Low croaking of many frogs seemed to sound in harmony with the high-pitched chirps of the little brown birds. The leaves gracefully dwindled down to the ground, creating a soft blanked made up of different shades of brown, red, orange, and yellow. His parents would get into a big argument after dinner and he would just walk out the door. He couldn't stand hearing his parents fight. All the yelling and shouting, and even the occasional swearing, were too much for Jon to handle. He remembered one time five years ago when he was seven; his dad became infuriated during another fight, and left the house for a week. But Jon had a special seat up in a tree, in the woods where he could sit, relaxed and carefree. He felt like he could escape all his problems. He would sit there for hours, wasting the time away hoping his problem would disappear. So now Jon was coming upon the special spot. After he climbed up at least twenty-five feet of sheer rock, he finally stood in front of the tree. Filled with low branches and comfortable perching seats, this was the u

"Yea, we're best friends. You've got my word; I won't tell a soul," Jon said trying to help Tony feel a little more secure.

ltimate climbing tree. Jon had a favorite spot that was high above the soft forest floor. It was a cool, crisp evening, just before the sun was about to set. Jon listened to the quiet "pitter-patter" of the soft blanket of rain meeting the hard, cold wood. He sat there in silence, thinking. Just thinking about how he wished his parents could get along. And then, without even noticing, Jon fell into a deep sleep. He was suddenly awakened by the sound of voices. Off in the distance, he could hear two boys were arguing about something. They slowly started to walk closer to where Jon was, but he was safe from them seeing him for he was lofted high up in the tree. Since the angle was bad, he could only see Tony, Jon's best friend. Jon and Tony went way back together; they'd both been best friends since they were in the first grade. "What's Tony doing here at this hour of the night? And who's he fighting with?" Jon wondered. He couldn't figure out what they were saying, but there was a lot of yelling. And suddenly the yelling broke out into a physical fight. They threw punches at each other that made hard slapping sounds the like cracking of old, dry wood. Then the fight reached its climax. Tony, taking advantage of the other boy's moment of vulnerability, delivered one punch that set the boy back a few feet and down off the ledge. Tony quickly clambered down to see if the boy was alive. "Oh no! Oh God no!" Tony cried out with terror, and then ran out of sight into the darkness. Fear rapidly crawled through Jon's body, sending a chill straight down his back and out to the tips of his fingers. Now he was the only other witness to a murder committed by his best friend. Jon slowly got down from the tree, trembling and cold. He walked home and went straight upstairs to bed, not answering any of the regular questions from his dad. He fell fast asleep soon to be awakened by the screeching of his alarm clock. The next day at school Jon didn't see Tony anywhere. He could hear kids buzzing in the hallways about what happened to Sean, the other boy with Tony last night. He over heard rumors that Tony and Sean both went to a party and hadn't come back yet. Jon couldn't bear hearing these rumors. He wished he could yell out in the hall what really happened last night. The final school bell rang and Jon dashed out the doors. He didn't want any of his friends to bug him if he knew anything from the previous night. Instead of going home where his mom would nag him about why he was out so late, he decided to go to the special spot. He ran there as fast as he could, for he wanted to see if the body was still there. Jon reached the bottom of the rocks, and stopped to catch his breath. He le
