A detailed Summary of Courage
There has been a moment though out every persons life were they have had to mount some courage to overcome an obstacle, goal or even a disaster. In Webster's Dictionary, courage is defined as, "the attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful"("courage" 318). Courage is considered to be a noble and right thing in almost every ones mind. Whether or not someone obtains this can make a huge difference in the way people look on, talk about and even whether or not they will try to befriend that person. Courage can be defined by characteristics; bravery, daring, gallantry.
Bravery is an example of being courageous. The word "bravery" is defined in Webster's New World Dictionary as, "the quality of being brave; valor" (Bravery 170). One example of bravery is the story of a fifteen-year-old boy in Texas. In the New American news, "Teen risked life to save a young girl"(The New American, Feb 25, 2002), this is a great example of the word "bravery". To be gallant is another way to describe the word "courage". Gallantry is defined in Webster's Dictionary as, "nobility of behavior or spirit; heroic courage" ("gallantry" 552). Gallantry can be described by an example. There was a boy who has been selected for national gallantry award; the reason why he has been chosen for gallantry award is, because he saved three lives in the liver. When he saw three girls who were drowning in river, he had courage to swim across the river in the village, which was in spate to save three girls from drowning. The secretary of the India Child Welfare council said "the boy had been invited for the felicitation at the celebration of the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi and Children's Day celebration."(Hindu, Nov 18, 1999). There are many people who were tried to save people from drowning, but many people have been killed. Everyone knows that, it's very dangerous, but this boy put himself in danger to save other lives, which is very courageous.
Another good term that describes courage, is the word daring. Daring is defined in Webster's New World Dictionary as, "having, showing, or requiring a bold willingness to take risks or violate conventions"("daring" 350~351).
