A Web of Symbolism
The use of symbolic language enhances a story by displaying the author's message and offering new meanings for the story. Marie-Louise von Franz, a writer and psychologist, was an expert on the significance of fairy tales. In her book, Interpretation of Fairy Tales, von Franz states, "...we can put forward the hypothesis that every fairy tale is a relatively closed system compounding one essential psychological meaning which is expressed in a series of symbolical pictures and events and is discoverable in these (1)." Von Franz suggests that the message the author expresses in his or her fairy tale can be deciphered through the author's symbolic language. Our website attempts to better understand Snow White and Bluebeard by explaining the symbols found in the stories. The site Julia and I created is titled Symbolism in Fairy Tales. Our site discusses the affect literary symbolism has had on fairy tales. The site includes a page that provides the meanings and importance of certain symbols in Snow White and a similar page on symbols in Bluebeard. Our site also includes a page with links to other symbolism web sites, Snow White sites, Bluebeard sites, and other relevant sites. Through the information we provided in our site, fairy
Julia and I both spent a lot of time on this project. Initially I was the one to think of the topic and write the topic paper. Then Julia was the one to download Dreamweaver and figure out how to use it. I worked on the Snow White page, Julia worked on the Bluebeard page, and we did the other pages together. We did a lot of work separately because it was hard to find times during study and finals week to meet but overall I think we both did an equal amount of work. Through these phone calls and emails we decided on two stories to use as examples for our topic: Snow White and Bluebeard. After we had everything planned out, I wrote the Website topic paper. After I emailed the topic paper and before our second web workshop, Julia downloaded Dreamweaver and started picking the colors for our web site. During this time I came up with a list of helpful links for our site. We both began to research symbolism by checking-out and reading a few books from the library. At the second web workshop, we each had many notes but no real information for our site. It took awhile for Julia and I to decide on a topic for our site. First, we tried to combine our research papers in a creative way but we could not find any way to relate them. We went through our
