In 1984, Winston is finally broken down by the Thought Police after enduring emotional, physical and psychological torture. Although he ultimately gives up in the end, Winston should be respected for his persistence in resisting the Thought Police.
Winston goes through an unbearable amount of intense physical torture in his fight against the Thought Police. They mercilessly pound him and pump him full of electricity until it is like "his body was being wrenched out of shape, the joints were being slowly torn apart."(p 257). O'Brien will not stop the torture until Winston succumbs to the fact that he is holding up five fingers. Although Winston does submit, he endures over double the intensity of the original pain until it is at the point where he can not physically keep conscious unless it stopped. Therefore he should be respected for this courage.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Winston knows that he will likely not make it out alive and he knows that the odds are against him, however he still fights the good fight. O'Brien asks Winston if he "is prepared to commit suicide, if and when we order you to do so" (p180) and without hesitation, Winston agrees. Winston knows he is in this for the long haul and does not care what happens to himself. This shows that although he does give up, Winston is prepared to die for his fight, and he would have tried anything in his power to win, but there is just nothing he could have done.
Winston is also faced with the emotional torture that he does not only have to conform to Big Brother, but he also must betray his love Julia. He holds out for her as long as he possibly can. Through all the torture and in the face of more torture, Winston says to O'Brien's face "I have not betrayed Julia". He knows that this wil
