Destiny, can it be escaped?

The play Oedipus the king, by Sophocles, displays how a person cannot escape fate. It doesn't matter what decisions are made, it will all benefit towards the destined situation that was already planned out before their own birth. Oedipus made decisions in his life, and didn't know that he was part of a prophecy, but no matter what he did or who tried to get in his way, the prophecy was fulfilled. Oedipus had been living a lie and was happy with that life, but in the end he found out that truth and realized the truth really hurts. He had to accept his fate and live with his embarrassment and shame.

There was one thing Oedipus didn't realize; maybe there was something going wrong with his plan to stay away from the parents he loved so much. Oedipus knew of the prophecy that had been said before he was even born. The prophet itself would be shameful if it were to happen to anyone. Oedipus revealed his fate to a messenger telling him, "I am destined to mate with my mother, and shed my father's blood with my own hands..." (Page 69) The prophecy was suppose to come true at any cost. Oedipus learns at this point that the man he thought was his father really wasn't. The messenger had told Oedipus that he gave him to Polybus (

Oedipus had many decisions to choose between when he decided he had to get away from those he thought were his parents. The entire journey to a new place caused him to make his fate a reality. He tells Jocasta about his journey from Corinth and on his way Oedipus's realized that he came to that very spot and killed people there; " As I journeyed on I came near to this triple crossroad...I struck the driver...in no time at all he was hit by the stick I held in my hand and rolled backwards...I killed the whole lot of them." (Page 56-57) The place where Laius was killed by a supposed group of robbers was the same place Oedipus had killed people that he didn't know. It was Oedipus's choice to kill those people without knowing who they were or their purpose on that road. Also, he knew the prophecy said that he himself was to kill his own father, he should have been smarter to not kill anyone, to then avoid any mistakes that could have made the prophecy true. When he realized his mistake it was too late for him to alter the outcome of his events. He chose to kill those men that day, and because of his decision his fate became reality.

There were many times that Oedipus could have known the truth, but it was as one specific time that it had to happen. The prophecy was fulfilled before he could even find out about his father. If he had found out about his father he could have prevented the prophecy. There were other ways though he could have avoided the prophecy. If he knew there was a chance the prophecy could be true he would have not killed anyone, just to make sure. I think he would have rather been dead than to face the humiliation of always believing that he was innocent to only find out that he's the murderer of his father. Every decision he made
