Love is a very powerful human emotion that can bring people of different social standings together. In today's society love can bring people of two entirely different social classes together with very little pressure and insult from third parties to keep these people apart. For example a person who is considered lower class by today's standard, could fall in love with a person who is considered to be in the upper class tier. In today's World, it would be reasonably tolerated and respected by each person's piers, a lot more than it would be at the turn of the century.

The Youth in the early twentieth century were very disillusioned because of World War One. The young were restless, and wanted to be wild. The war had just ended and people, especially the young people returning from the war, wanted to live their lives to the fullest to forget about the tough times they went through. However the morality of the times would not allow many of the things the youthful population wanted to do. People wanted to dance close to one another, drink booze, and stay up all night. These practices were considered vulgar, and some, like drinking booze were illegal. However this did not stop the people from living how they wanted to.

But she had to marry Tom, because if she had run away with Gatsby, who at the time was very poor, she would have lost all of her class stature and dignity with her piers. Even after Gatsby made a slew of money bootlegging, she could never love him for other reasons involving social class. Gatsby was considered "New Money," and uneducated in the ways of being rich. Tom on the other hand, always had money, so he had always been accustomed to having money and would have been labeled "Old Money."
