Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" was considered to be one of his favorite works. The poem is about the construction of a rock wall between two people's property and the significance of the establishment of boundaries with the outer and inner worlds of a person. Frost's poem shows an appreciation for nature as well as the importance of sharing the world.
The two people in this poem build a rock wall to define the property line between their lands, but actually may be building it to end arguments. It seems that the chore of mending the wall takes place once a year. One neighbor does the task because he enjoys doing it and sees a tradition. The wall between the neighbors has apparently been in existence for quite some time. The line "Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top in each hand, like an old-stone savage armed." suggests that the person carrying the stones is an old person who has been doing this task year after year. One can see an aged, sun worn skinned man slowly completing the labor intensive task of carrying stones to rebuild the fence.
The narrator of the poem does not seem to see the importance or have the same feelings about building a physical structure between the two neighbors. One feels that "Good fences make good neighbors." which seems to mean that a physical structure is necessary to keep their lives private.
