Gender

For this assignment I decided to spend some time at various stores around town to see if I could find a sense of gender division. I figured that the mall would be a good spot to go so that I could be exposed to a wide variety of stores for both men and women. I decided that I would start at one end of the mall and casually work my way to the other end stopping periodically in between.

JC Penney was my first stop. As I walked around it seemed that the store was being traveled by mostly women. There was the occasional man here and there that just seemed to be killing time. My assumption was that he was probably tagging along with his wife. This largely female population was what I had expected. It seems that the stores that specialize in clothing are usually populated more by women than by men.

My next stop was K.B. Toys. The store seemed to be quite busy. There were a variety of both men and women in


heavily occupied the hardware and automotive section while the females populated the clothing and household departments.

The last stop that I made was at Sears. Since I spend a lot of time at Sears myself, you know "Craftsman," I was not surprised to see that the store was ventured by both of the sexes. Sears was another example of gender separation within a store. The men

I skipped a few stores before I chose my next stop. I decided to go to Hallmark. My theory was right about that place. It was all women except two people, me and another man that appeared to be with his wife. I figured that store would be mostly women because they just don't sell the things that most males are attracted to.
